BASF completed its AgBiTech acquisition March 31, gaining NPV biocontrol technology and manufacturing to expand its biologicals portfolio globally

BASF finalized its acquisition of Australian biological insect control company AgBiTech on March 31, 2026, securing ownership of the firm's intellectual property, manufacturing operations, and research facilities in a deal that positions the German chemical giant at the center of a fast-growing segment of global agriculture. The transaction extends BASF's biologicals capabilities at a moment when demand for non-chemical crop protection is rising across several major farming markets. "Joining BASF marks an important milestone for AgBiTech's mission to make biological insect control accessible to farmers worldwide," said Adriano Vilas-Boas, AgBiTech's chief executive.
Central to the acquisition is AgBiTech's nucleopolyhedrovirus technology, known as NPV — a pathogen-based approach that targets pest insects with precision while leaving beneficial organisms unharmed. Folded into BASF's broader crop protection portfolio, NPV gives growers a biological tool that can work alongside conventional chemistry rather than replace it. That combination, analysts said, is increasingly what modern integrated pest management programs require.
South America stands as the deal's most immediate commercial priority. Growers in Brazil have adopted biological inputs at a pace few anticipated three years ago, driven by tightening regulatory standards and export market pressure to reduce chemical residues. AgBiTech's established manufacturing footprint in the region allows BASF to serve those growers at scale from existing infrastructure, rather than building capacity from scratch.
Elsewhere, the transaction extends BASF's presence into the United States and Australia, where adoption of biological solutions has also accelerated. Resistance concerns with conventional insecticides, combined with consumer demand for residue-conscious produce, have pulled both markets toward biocontrol at a faster rate than previously projected. Owning the underlying intellectual property and production assets, company officials suggested, offers competitive advantages that licensing arrangements could not provide.
With the deal closed, BASF enters the second half of 2026 holding a broader biologicals toolkit and a manufacturing base capable of serving growers across multiple continents. Whether that infrastructure proves sufficient to meet surging demand may shape the company's strategy in the years ahead.
